These are pictures we took for our magazine, ive talked about in this small powerpoint why we tryed different angled and different shots such as MCU and CU shots. I also talked about the characters costum.
Relates to Question 4 with showing how we collected our raw footage and then edited them together to make scenes link and also delete which ever bits were not needed.
Question 3- AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
This is our changed video after receiving audience feeback, we made the improvements in which the audience told us, even tho we recieved criticisum we took it postitive as they were trying to help us improve our work and we would benefit from it.One of the main suggestions was to change the our soundtrack of "Shake it out" to the intrumental version as then the sound of Florences distinctive voice made it hard for the diaogue of the characters to be heard in some places of the trailer. We made another change of adding a title card at the start of the trailer saying " Regrets collect like out freinds" this worked as it was the opening line of the song aswell as it had the comparison of "Sambuca" finding out she is pregnant. The reason why we chose this song was because people will be able to reconise the song as it is in the charts aswell so they will understand the title card at the beginning.
The audience feedback also pointed out that the title cards should match the beats of the music as a couple were slightly off beat so this was an improvement, the title cards matching the beat of the music is a commen factor of soap trailers and we hope we have achived this.
The audience feedback has made me and Emma realise that somethings work and somethings dont like trial and error, we just had to see what worked.
OUTLOOK ON IMPORVEMENTS
Unfortunatly the instrumental version of "Shake it out" didnt work. So we hope to change it back in when we next edit out video, the reason why we thought this didnt work as it made the video have a dull feel and the music didnt seem to cause emotion and the massive swell of notes and Florencesvoice towards the end causes tension. Aswell Some of the lyrics relate to what is actually happening in the trailer creating the narrative such as "Regrets collect like old friends" at the beginning when sambuca finds out she is pregnant. we have to be careful whilst editing the song to make the chorus come in earlier as there might be sudden cuts in the song.
This is one of the images we used from another groups storyline to feature in our magazine.
Using photoshop we cropped around the image so there is no longer green in the background.
We brainstormed different ideas of what type of magazine we should do as there are so many ones out there to choose from, so we gathered different types of magazines for inpriration and to pick names for the magazine. My group looked at "TV Sattelite" magazine and "TV easy" as we realised that "TV easy" wasnt the correct magazine for our ancillery and it didnt fit in with our type if trailer which is a traditinol, serious TV soap trailer. as we werent aiming it to be "Trashy" and it wasnt a "Parody". We chose "TV Satillite" as this was our favourite and the fact it was still bright but clean&sharp.
On our magazine there is only going to be one character who is "The Murderer" just like this magzine we would like to use the same postitoning and a mid shot of the character. For extra photos, we hope to use some pictures from within the groups in class, so we can feature other storylines in our magazine.

American soaps
•“Cheesy”- dramatic, exaggerated
•Reality becomes unrealistic
•Non-dietetic scores in scenes to create atmosphere and tell audience how to “read” the scene.
•MES- glamorous= rich characters
•The American dream, exaturated version.
•Massive houses, expensive costumes, perfect hair and make-up this implies they have allot of time to do this and are not normal people.
•Unattainable life styles- you can’t get it, you can see it but you can’t grab it.
•Escapist- Americans like to absorb them self in this bubble
•There is no introduction of the characters as it is 13 seasons in there in no need to, as the audience is familiar with the characters
Non – Diegetic
Scores in scenes to create atmosphere tells audiences how to read the scenes.
About TV Drama Soaps
•They were broadcasted in the day time
•Broadcasted on the radio
•Soap opera originated from in 1920s in America, originally an advertisement for women e.g detergents / cleaning products
•Soap in a feminine genre – a genre aimed primarily at women
•Because soap is aimed at women this affects scheduling, storylines, narrative, perspective, costume.
• Women’s traditional lifestyle of the target audience affects the scheduling- soaps in the UK are generally on at or after mealtimes.
•Soap opera runs continuously it doesn’t end, on the same channel, in the same time slot for years!
•Because soaps are constantly in the public eye, they become part of the cultural psyche. They become part of who we are, the characters become people.
*The characters become people
•Generally between 10-15 main characters. Storylines interconnect and overlap so audiences stay interested.
* Storylines can be relatable - audiences watch and understand what is happeningand empathise with the characters or hate them
•Catharsis – emotional cleansing: the purging of negative emotions through watching conflict. Soap can be therapeutic.
•Characters lives are worse than “ yours” – you feel better for watching someone go through something bad.
*Soap operas become an escapism for many audiences
•Just from the title card we have the colours aimed at girls (aqua and pink), the gadgets aimed at boys Nikon camera) and the male& female symbol
•Last title card the institution, channel, brand. we have male and female colours (red and aqua) All week at 6.30 and the twitter feed)
•The shot started when the lyrics started, the zoom takes the duration of the lyric. Up beat contempary music- 2 points of light from side and behind creates shadow showing this is going to be a sexy soap.
•Low angle shot, you see a gloved hand opening the door, and then you pan up. The camera is always moving or there is always something moving in the scene.
•Bringing the audience into the room when Lindsey is walking up the stairs the camera is positioned stay at the table with Lindsey and it feels like the audience is actually there. And then the camera looks down on Brendan from half way up the stairs- high angle shot.
•As well as panning across the room you can follow the character into the room and then the camera settles at the people sitting down and it is below the eye level so it is like you’re sat down with them.
•Hollyoaks uses a lot more hand held cameras to make it more exciting and making it realistic for audiences
•Depth of field- reverse over the shoulder shot- 2 points of light on both of them even in silas in the background showing he is not an extra and it looks like he has a devil on his shoulder.
Non- diegetic soundtrack creates “Thought Beats” – music matches edits. Song is contemporary therefore soap is for a teenage audience
• multiple storyline “snippets” in quick succession
• Lots of lights on stars face. Unlike other soaps, light comes from sharp points to create interesting shapes and shadows for the viewer. This has become a convention of the soap, like the “grey” lighting in Eastenders.
• Murderer is anomaly. He’s older than the rest of cast, and in a different place. Camera is at low angle to make him look threatening.
• Two sources of light in some scenes to create shadows
• 12 SECONDS: Static camera with character walking into MCU creates movement with a static camera
• Pan up
• Zoom
• Deep focus
• Asymmetrical framing
• Faces of main characters are fully lit so audience know to concentrate on their emotions
• 13 SECONDS MCU with pull focus to character in background. Pull focus matches movement of character in foreground, linking main character and background character
• Short shots- generally 2-3 seconds each
• Choppy editing to create interest
• POV reverse shots
• Shot reverse shot
• Side on shot
• “Texas” and “Dodger” (great names!) standing very close together-positioning lets audience know about their relationship
Each person in my group gathered a scene with a script and camera shots& angles, we then chose which scripts would work and be good to do for our trailer. Most of the scenes were from Hollyoaks as its target age group is aimed at teenagers and we wanted the trailer to appeal to a young audience. All together we acted out 3 scenes scenes from Hollyoaks and 1 dramatic scene of a break up from Coronation street which can relate to teenagers.

* There is a long establishing shot at the beginning showing the huge amount of land surrounding the city. showing the amount of wealth there is. * The minor chords start, the room is very dark with dark wood implying that it is a male office. A males voice heard as the establishing shot fades " All these fights over you and oli and southfock, we lade waste to everything in are path JR and for what?" As the mysteries man says "oil" there was a close up shot of a gold watch showing the wealth of what oil can give you. As the male character says his last words there is a mid-close up shot and we finally get a glimce of him, with the natural lighting coming in on the left side of his face to highlight him from the dark room. *The use of title cards, shows that the trailor has developed - Money, Power, Rivialry * the title cards are used to answer all the characters questions... * The title cards all have a huge amount of land behind them as the background, there is a sudden extra burst of major chords to imply how much of a big part they play within the characters on Dallas. * Power- " Oil is the past , i couldnt disagree more, the shot reverse shot implies tension. the camera cuts to a side mid-close up shot of two males standing front on to eachother showing there is tension between them. *The rivalry is also shown in the next shot which shows another shot reverse shot with John saying "you'll never be a Ewing christopher"
